About MeMy name is Mr. Stone and I welcome you to my Civics and History classes as well as to Wilkinson Junior High. This is my 14th year teaching, but my second as an Eagle. I am looking forward to a great year of growth and success!
I graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA in History and a minor in Political Science. I also have earned my Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of West Florida. My wife, six year old son, and our twin 2 year old girls help to keep me balanced as well as my love of sports. I am originally from Lake Orion, Michigan and my love for my original home state will become very apparent. Below are descriptions of what your Social Studies class will be about this year. Please take a minute to review each one. |
What is Civics |
Civics is the study of the principles, functions, and organization of government; the origins of the American political system; the roles, rights, and responsibilities of United States citizens; and methods of active participation in our political system.

What should I expect from Civics |
We will be taking a very in depth look at the formation of our country and government through the analyzation of primary source documents such as the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution. The main focus of the class will be preparing the students to take the Civics End of Course Exam (EOC) near the end of the year. This exam is worth 30% of the students' overall grade and encompasses all of the information that we will be covering over the course of the year. It is imperative that you take an active approach to studying Civics as it will help you prepare to succeed on the EOC.

What should I expect from
|
We will be analyzing the history of the United States from the time of exploration to post Civil War Reconstruction. From war, to peace, and everything in between we will be focusing on primary source documents to unravel the past and engage students to gain a deeper understanding of how our nation has grown from its founding. This class does not include an end of course exam like 7th, but will be very reading and writing intensive.
